“I first got my hair cut here in October 2011 by T.J. It was a fabulous experience and a wonderful cut! Thank goodness because I didn’t get it cut again until today – five months later (I left my last job and haircuts just haven’t been in the budget)!

Amanda was my stylist today, and she was awesome from the get go. Very understanding about the fact that it had been ages since my last cut and she LISTENED to everything I said about liking the length but needing to get rid of the dead weight (I have very fine hair with an annoying slight wave to it on the bottom layers). She worked with my cowlicks, fixed my layers, did some other little snips to give some body and to accentuate the waves if I don’t want it straight, and did EXACTLY what I wanted. Which is AWESOME when you’re getting your hair cut, even if you’re not super fussy (I’m not – it’s hair – it’ll grow back, but an amazing cut is a complete BONUS). And she didn’t load my hair down with tons of product, which I LOVE. I hate leaving a salon and feeling like I need to wash my hair when I get home. No worries this time! It was the exact product I use at home (Phomollient or however ya spell it), and she used the same kind of brush I do, which proved to me that I’ll be able to recreate this great look on my own.

Charles at the front desk was a complete gentleman and was great about making sure I had my facebook discount (like the XEX facebook page, and you’ll get notifications about awesome specials – I got $10 off my cut today!).

I’ll be starting my new job in a couple of weeks, and I’ll be starting it with a fantastic haircut, thanks to Amanda! See y’all soon, and I promise it won’t be another 5 months this time!”

“Finding the right salon for my hair care services, is a pursuit that has had spotty success, at best. Desiring a new hair cut and new color line that meets my specific needs led me to XEX. I intended it to be another exploratory visit and went feeling skeptical. Georgia was recommended as the stylist/colorist for me. She didn’t disappoint! She didn’t blink when I questioned whether the color line she was using would meet my needs. She assured me – and it worked well. As for the haircut, it is so hot that it’s smokin! Going back this week for another visit.”

“One year after moving to Chicago, I think I’ve finally found my hair salon!

It was basically love at first sight – as in, I walked past it thinking it was an art gallery/store and thought “I should stop in after my haircut”…then realized it was the salon! So, very nice atmosphere: check.

Being offered a glass of wine upon arrival: double check.

Keara took excellent care of me – she listened to what I wanted and offered advice without being pushy, and did an amazing job with my hair. I absolutely love it! It’s the kind of haircut that made me wish I had a hot date afterwards to show it off.

I also love that they use Aveda products – not something I’d normally splurge on, but it’s nice to be spoiled with them every once in a while

I’ll be going here for my hair from now on. What a relief…”

“I stopped in last week for a haircut with Barbara. She was amazing!!!! I explained that I wanted to grow out my over layered bob and she really took her time on me before she started cutting. She cut all my layers even and my hair looks fuller now. It is shorter but at least it is all the same length and it will look nice once it starts growing in.”

“I recently went to this salon for my brother’s wedding. The bride, bridesmaids, mothers all got their hair and makeup done here. There were several staff assisting our group and everyone was very professional and did a great job. I have short hair so there’s not much you can do to it, but John made it sleeker and fancier than normal so I was pleased. The woman who did my makeup did an awesome job as well and it last all day and through the night. The salon also offers airbrush makeup that the bride had done and it looked great as well. I did not pay for my services, but I took a look at the price list on the website and it’s pretty reasonable and worth the money in my opinion. Best part of the salon was that they offered us coffee, tea, water, wine when we got there – 10am is definitely wine time!”

“I visited XEX 2 weeks ago, and I had a terrific experience. Everyone was so friendly. The salon is very colorful, and it goes well with the murano glass artwork. If you like beautiful glass artwork you should look into this Art. Visit http://shopdarra.com. When I arrived to the salon, I was greeted, and offered several different beverages ( which is awesome after a long working day). My stylist name is Gary, he was very nice, patient and professional. He really cares about his craft. He suggested different hairstyles suitable to my facial structure, and lifestyle. The end result was fabulous!! “Just moved to Chicago and I have been searching for a good salon that has affordable prices. I know its hard to find but I got lucky! After trying several salons that advertise good deals, normally they make the appointment with a junior stylist. That wasn’t the case at XEX. XEX has a great atmosphere. quality workmanship, and positive energy. My stylist John worked magic on my hair. He recommended that I get the Keratin Express treatment because of the summer’s humidity. It has been almost 5 weeks and my hair still looks great.. Thanks John!!  I will be back.”

David the co owner was great, just like my haircut, conservative and stylish. David told me the best products to use on my hair, and showed me how to use them. “I stumbled across XEX by accident. I was in between meetings and needed a haircut badly. Also I had a full head of grey hair, and didn’t know what to do about it. I was matched up with Georgia a stylist at XEX, she gave me a great haircut, and covered my greys. She was wonderful. Typically I’m not the salon type of guy, but Georgia has transformed me. “Holy crap. I’ve been looking for a salon in Chicago since I’ve moved here over a year ago without any luck. I got a coupon good for a free cut, half off highlites, and free wax for XEX and decided to try my luck. After a horrible experience a few years ago I haven’t coloured my hair since, so it was with major trepidation that I scheduled for the highlites. I was booked with Georgia by a very polite and efficient desk manager and awaited my appointment. I went in today and didn’t have to wait at all. Georgia offered me a beverae and proceeded with the consultation. Since my hair hadn’t been done in so long, she explained the difference between a full and partial highlites. I opted for the full in case I couldn’t get back right away and she said they would last all summer. I was very specific saying I’d be pissed if it was tiger/zebra stripes and I wanted a ‘very natural sun-kissed blonde’. She told me not to worry and ended up using two blondes to blend it well.

She was extremely quick and efficient, not overly chatty but still personable. I was out of there in just under and hour after everything. The colour was amazing! This woman has talent with blending and making everything look perfectly natural. I highly recommend. It was exactly what I asked for and wanted in my head.

The cut was perfect, I like my length but wanted to get rid of the dry ends, which she did perfectly. It was just enough layering to make it bounce and move. My eyebrows also ended up perfectly shaped by Georgia. It’s the best wax I’ve had since I moved here.

Overall Georgia was great. The salon was small, but well-lit and inviting. The desk manager was as kind as he was on the phone (they even call a day ahead to confirm appointments), and Georgia did everything herself so no need to tip 10 people.
A very pleasant first experience. I will be back.”

I’ve found it hard to find someone with great technique who also really listens and can translate what I say into the haircut I want. Gary is a pro. I waited a week to write my review because sometimes after a few days with a new haircut you start to see where it is lacking. This is a great haircut and I’ll be going back to Gary again and again!”

“I’ve been to XEX twice in the last 2 months and had absolutely fantastic experiences both times. At my first visit I had my hair styled for a Valentine’s date. The stylist really listened to what I wanted and gave me lovely loose big curls that lasted 12 hours. My boyfriend (now fiancé) actually proposed that night and my hair looked great in all the pictures. At my second visit I had a shampoo, cut and style. I had previously received a bad cut at another salon, and Gary did a great job fixing it. Again, I was listened to, advised on what would be right for me, and given a wonderful cut.

XEX has the energy of art gallery meets salon, decorated with Murano-style blown glass works that are also for sale. The staff here is professional but fun, and most of all they are experienced and talented with hair.  I was greeted and offered a glass of wine when I walked in the door, my appointments started on time, and there was no product pushing. If you are looking for a friendly, high-end, and affordable salon then you’ll love XEX.”

“Throughout my life I have learned a couple of hair lessons….I am not visual so although i can cut magazine picture of haircuts I like or insist on a specific haircut, this usually results in utter disappointment.  The trick is to find a hair dresser who will listen to what i like and don’t like and they can visualize a solution which will look good on me.  

I have lived in Pit, Philly, Columbus, LA and currently in Miami (but I work in Chicago) and I have struggled in the last 10 years to love a haircut/color so I have been willing to settle with I like my color.  Due to the snowstorm I stayed in Chicago this weekend and decided to get my hair done and XEX since I was going to see my Fiancé next weekend for Valentine’s Day.  I was looking for Good Enough given the last minute appointment and the special at XEX for 1/2 price on first time customers.

WOW–I haven’t said I love my color and the cut  ot that it was exactly what I wanted in years—–no need for the I like but I will love it when it grows a bit (which I typically tell my friends–trying to justify my new do)

Nicole at XEX  was amazing…she listened to my concerns and I left with the color I have been wanting for a long time.

I think I am just going to commit to Chicago for my hair….Nicole is certainly worth it!  Amazingly, even the full price for a full highlight and cut is totally reasonable.

YAY!  Love it and made my Snowed-in weekend at the Blackstone (FYI its a reasonable 1 mile walk from here) a switch from a disappointment to a great weekend!!!”

“Loves this “Hair Gallery”! It’s a great experience from the time you walk in until you leave. Charles at the front desk is so warm and welcoming. The salon is always tidy and very cute. My hair stylist is John. Loves him! You can really tell that he’s truly into hair care. My hair always feels great and looks fab when he’s done. He also always seems to recognize when I’ve had “one of those days” and offers me a glass of wine. Does it get any better?!

My only disappointment is that I can’t go to him more often. I highly recommend XeX Hair Gallery and especially John as your stylist. You will not be disappointed.”

“I loved my visit to XEX!

I found out about this place through a google search and this yelp page.  The great reviews and 50% off advertisement for first time customers convinced me to take a chance, so I set up an appointment with David, and got my hair cut last week.

I am so happy with the results!  I was immediately impressed with the artisic look of the place (part of it is an art gallery!), and was greeted by the receptionist, who offered me a drink.

From the beginning David had his work cut out for him, because I had a big ugly clump of bangs on only one side of my face that I’ve been trying to grow out, and didn’t want to re-cut.  I told him that my ideal look was bangs and lots of layers throughout my hair, but that since I’m expecting a baby any day now, I wanted something I could take care of easily.  I asked him if he could still manage a similar low-maintenance cut, knowing what my ideal look was.  He told me that since bangs require a little work and attention as they grow out he would steer away from those and go for a long layered look, but make the layers long enough so that I could still easily pull them away from my face.  I cannot BELIEVE what a good job he did blending my old bangs in with my hair!  He made something that would work well as they were growing out, until we could get to my ideal cut.  I went in expecting an okay cut just to tide me over in this awkward in-between stage, and I walked out with something SO pretty!  It is without a doubt one of the best haircuts I’ve ever gotten!”

“Just had a haircut with TJ at XEX, and it out-rivaled all hair salon experiences I’ve had in Chicago, NY or SF. I tried this place after reading that a stylist here, TJ, is very good with cutting thick, long Asian hair. I walked away incredibly impressed by his technique and level of service. He did an amazing job with my thick, unmanageable hair and really listened to what I wanted. “XEX Hair Gallery is AMAZING!!! I can’t rave about this place enough! Not only is it trendy with a great vibe, but TJ is absolutely the best stylist I’ve ever went to!!

My grandfather is a barber in Texas and I frequently went to him until moving to Chicago around 3 months ago. When it came time for a haircut I was lost and didn’t know where to go, so I spoke to a couple of friends that I’ve known for years and they suggested that I go to XEX. Not only was the first cut 50% off, but it was a very warm and hospitable place to go to.

TJ made friendly conversation while not getting lost in it and did a bang-up job. My hair isn’t the best of hair to style and cut, and I frequently don’t know what direction to take with it. I also have developed a problem with it balding in the back, but the job that TJ has done you can barely tell (and I have a short haircut).

Needless to say I have a standing appointment with him every two weeks now. Not only is he a great stylist, but the free beer doesn’t hurt when I’ve had a long day at work and want to relax.

I personally do not know where some of these reviewers are getting their information about a cash only tip, because out of the 6 times that I have now been to XEX in the past 3 months I have not heard of such a policy, and always tip on my credit card.

To sum it all up, if you want an outstanding haircut at a place that’s trendy, also offers a variety of other services, and want to pick up some amazing art go see TJ at XEX Hair Gallery and be prepared to be wowed!!”
